Come on Lane… smile buddy.
I like his answer on the 2-point win question from Scott Wolf.
Best part: “We’ve got to learn to enjoy wins better.”
Amen.

I’ll admit I’ve been slow to jump on the Matt Barley band wagon. I definitely see the God-given talent, but for me character and attitude are more important. That’s why I own jersey’s for Lendale White and Lawrence Jackson but not a Reggie Bush or Dwayne Jarrett (clarification: based on college careers). Last year, Barkley seemed a little too bulletproof. He was running on invincible juice and when he eventually lost, it hurt his play because it hurt his aura.
Worse, I didn’t like how Pete Carroll made it all about him. The Golden Boy quarterback could do no wrong in Carroll’s eyes, and he’d go as far as naming other players who were at fault for Barkley’s (admittedly freshman) mistakes. I was hesitant to jump on the bandwagon of Matt Barkley the individual while Matt Barkley the team leader was still very much a work in progress.
But after last week and started to see a different side of him. It’s only been a year, and he’s only a sophomore, but his poise at Hawaii was amazing.
And then I saw this interview with Sport Illustrated.
I’m officially on the bandwagon. I have no idea how long he had to prepare his answers and if he had help drafting the answers, but I don’t care. He managed to strike the perfect line on each. He doesn’t come across like a college sophomore. But he is.
Here’s an idea. Lane “I hate the media so I’ll cross my arms and pout with a sourpuss face” Kiffin should let Matt Barkley do all his press conferences and become the face of the team.
