John Maselli – The Italian Stallion
When I applied to USC, I had no idea there was such thing as a debate scholarship. Along with my application, I fired off a letter of introduction and some letters of recommendation to the big USC Debate Team – thinking I could be a walk-on or something (in my mind, the Debate Team was a bit like the football team). Imagine my excitement when I learned that, not only did they want me to debate for them, but they wanted to give me some scholarship money to do it.
After about a year of college policy debate (where talking so fast that breathing is a disadvantage), I switched over to Parliamentary Debate. That turned out to be a very good move, because I was never going to be a super-fast talker. It just wasn’t my style.
And that’s how I met John Maselli. For two years, John would be my debate partner through top speaker awards, tournament championships and top national ranking for substantial periods over the two academic-years between 2000 and 2002.
Fight On, John! That crooked finger is barely even noticable…
Rehearsal Dinner – Dig In
It’s the groom’s family’s job to host the rehearsal dinner, or so I’m told by students of Emily Post (I wonder if her oppressive manifesto book is still sitting on the coffee table at my Dad’s house). Maybe it’s just me, or maybe this is how grooms roll, but planning this thing is quite a bit different than Tiffany and her Mom planning the wedding.
That is, I really don’t have to do anything. I’m sure I could, but I’m very happy to let others lift the weight on this one. It’s probably for the best anyway. If I had my way, we’d be eating chili-dogs and drinking bud in a place that had sawdust on the ground and served peanuts in metal buckets. I’m not kidding.
Without Objection…
As I mentioned before, because of where I work I have to get special permission to get married. Well, not to get married, so much as to accept wedding gifts, attend an event paid for by someone else that costs over $50 or accept drinks from buddies at a bachelor’s party. Can’t let anyone try to buy votes, you know.
So today, the letter from the Senate Select Committee on Ethics arrived. On it were the official signatures of Senators Voinovich (R-OH) and Johnson (D-SD) granting me the right to accept any gifts that our guests may see fit to offer.
The Engagement Photos
In order to truly appreciate our photographer and these pictures, you should know the story. It’s long, so I’ll give you the nuts and bolts. Since we live on the opposite coast, we had a very small window to do most of the planning for our wedding, including taking our engagement photos. We found a fantastic photographer and had about a 4 day window to schedule the photo shoot, and he was most gracious about accomodating our schedule. We decide to shoot at the beach, where most of his shoots are and he has the most experience. Beautiful pictures. The day of our shoot, happened to be one of the three days of the year it rains hard in Southern California. Rather than rescheduling (which wasn’t a possibility) he found a random church with a beautiful courtyard, and improvised the shoot. These are some of the results.
Rafael did a great job.
These are some of our favorites.

Rhiannon and on and on
Although I don’t have any pictures of her, Rhiannon is the one I have known the longest. Our mothers have been best friends since we were four years old. As long as I can remember, they have been jokingly comparing us. “Rhiannon won the Nobel Prize, Tiffany wrote her first concerto when she was only 2, Rhiannon wrote the US constitution when she was 3 months, Tiffany wrote the Bible in the womb…” Her mom was my mom’s matron of honor and Rhi was a bridesmaid. Rhi has three beautiful children, two of whom are going to be my flower girl and ring bearer.
A thing that I remember well is that in elementary school, Rhiannon was always in the cool group, while I was, let’s say less than cool. But she was always nice to me anyway. Now that’s a good friend.
