Anatomy of a Proposal: Part 2 – Shopping for “Watches”

One could build a pretty good case that me and Tiffany are Arwen and Aragorn (from the movie, not the appendixes). She’s beautiful, graceful, good at singing, dancing, speaking, has better than 20-20 vision naturally, a great sense of smell, rides horses, and speaks a beautiful foreign tongue (science, not Elvish), and I’m the guy who loves her, cormamin lindua ele he.

And so, thus began my quest for The One Ring. The One Ring to bind us forever to each other.

Waterfront hilton
Waterfront hilton
Yes this picture is taken from the ocean… It doesn’t get too much more waterfront then this

My mom and me
My mom and me
This is at the Embassy Suites in, I think, Anaheim

Isn’t my mom hot? I hope I look half as good as her when I’m her age. So yesterday we went around looking for reception venues. The first place we went was the Waterfront Hyatt in Huntington Beach. It was obviously a beautiful place with much to offer, but without going into the actual prices, it was E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E. I thought, holy crap, there’s no way we can afford to have a reception at these rates. The thing was, it didn’t even include that much. When Jed called as we were in the middle of the meeting with them, I was a little depressed. For those who dont know, I am pretty thrifty with my money. Not to say I’m cheap (obviously, look at that HUGE T.V. we just got), but I feel I work very hard for my money, and when I spend it, I want to know that it’s going for something worthwhile. As the numbers were thrown out for 200 or so guests, I kept thinking, “wow… that’s a nice downpayment on a house… wow… that could buy a nice car…” The thing that I have come to understand is that when it comes to weddings, people go out of they’re minds. For example, while my dress was very affordable and well priced, I watched as so many girls tried on dresses that were up to 6000 dollars! (And my dress still was prettier! :) )I digress. My point is that people spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars that they otherwise wouldn’t even dream of spending. What I have come to realize is that the money would not be spent on a car or a downpayment. If it isn’t going to be spent on the wedding, it wouldn’t be spent period. It really is “wedding money”. I’m having a hard time with it, but I’m sure if Jed were here, he’d be going crazy. And our wedding is going to be realtively well priced too.

The second place we went to was the Waterfront Hilton. I loved this place. The picture of it is at the top. I didn’t want to put any inside pictures to give away the ambience of the reception, but it was a phenominal place (right next door to the Hyatt) and the cost was less than half as much as the Hyatt was charging. Our reception will probably be there, but we’ll look around a little bit more just to see what else is out there. I think we have an appointment at the Newport Hyatt later. We’ll see. Today, we’re going to shop for wedding shoes and bridesmaid dresses. I’m thinking…. chartreuse

#8

Amy a good friend of mine posted this, and I went and signed up before I got all the way to #8. I guess my narcisism was curious; it has been satiated.

1) You are one of the most infuriating people I know. It’s part of your charm!
I get that a lot.

2) I think of the Sheryl Crow cover of “sweet child o’ mine”, because I often wonder if you hate it and how much.
I think she actually made that song about a freaking BABY. It’s not that kind of love song.

3) orange.
Hmm… mysterious. No such thing as cheesecake flavor?

4) :musher
Ah, NonEcdicus…

5) I think Dan and I hit you at the colorado swing. You handed our asses to us, but i sassed back pretty well.
You always were sassy…

6) a shark. don’t be offended. you just got an awful lot of teeth on ya!
I like sharks. ‘Cept when they are referencing lawyers.

7) what have you learned about tiff in the past year that’s most surprised you?
It’s hard to be surprised anymore because if there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past three years, it’s that there’s nothing beyond her. It may sound wierd, but I guess I was most surprised by how well she did living on her own. I had always thought the the reason she stayed so close to home was that her family and friends provided someting of a crutch.

I needed to realize the important difference between what I thought was dependence and was actually loyalty.

Correction: FIFTY inches of awesomeness…

It cost about $300 more than the 32″ LCD unit, and while it’s a few inches deeper, it’s 20 inches larger. And shipping was $25 less.

LCD/Plasma technology prices have dropped significantly for the first time due to a major jump in market penetration and demand. We are benefitting from that market adjustment by getting way more TV for our dollar. It’s still expensive, but it will last a very long time. Plus, Tiffany’s step-dad gets a 40% discount because he’s LAPD (thanks man!).

Meet our new TV.

It gets some pretty rave reviews.

Specs after the fold.

Need Your Prayers

Grandma and me, circa 1978-79

I just heard from my Mom, who is sitting at my Grandma’s bedside. Grandma had a fall last week, and she is not doing well. She had 12 stitches in her head, and was in a coma for a day. They operated on her brain to take care of a blood clot, and while my Mom says she’s doing better, I talked to her for a minute and she couldn’t form words or talk. My Grandpa sits with her 12 hours every day, holding her hand.

I’m fortunate to still have all four Grandparents, but they are all getting very old and health is beginning to fade. I was never really close to my Grandma because we lived thousands of miles away, but it’s always been clear that she really loved me, and it was always good to see her. Her poor health is going to be very hard on my Mom and Grandpa. She’s strong, but pray for her, and those that are with her.

Tiffany and I saw her the day before we got engaged out in Colorado, and both her and Grandpa looked great.

TV-Ready

What did I do today? Lest anyone suggest that she could “come back and find nothing different” I’ve taken some before and after pictures. Please remember, we’re still in the process of unpacking, which is one of the reasons it’s such a mess.

In any case, I think we’re ready for some technology-based furniture.

Before

After is on the other side of the fold…

Livejournal Blues?

I’m generally pretty good with software coding with platforms like Livejournal. I don’t do most of the coding myself, I’m a bit of a code-borrower. But Livejournal is proving to be somewhat of an enigma. I’m not sure if they just transformed to a new platform (S1 to S2), or what, but I can’t find any resources to do something as easy as adding some html to the sidebar.

Beyond that, there are all of these “views” for friends and different colors. I don’t know the community aspects of the page or how they work, but I’m thinking that I need a paradigm shift in my approach to this platform. I do not think it is what I thought it was…
